Virtual lunch is an online team building event where team members come together to share a meal remotely over video conferencing software. Example meal types include lunch and learns, theme lunches, and virtual tea parties. The main purpose of these events is to foster camaraderie in online offices. These activities are also known as remote lunches and Zoom lunches. The fact that my team became increasingly remote work blog engaged in these virtual team building events transposed into their day to day work. It was a wonderful idea that we implemented and it helped a new remote team turn into a tightly knit virtual family that ended up working together online and offline as well. Spaghetti Warrior even organized a face-to-face meeting with all the team members and took over organizing the weekly team building lunch breaks.

In the beginning, you may find yourself feeling stressed and not getting much work done. You can also schedule “social breaks” to check your phone during specific times. That said, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the constant digital stimulation. Do your best to disconnect at the end of the day and consider a digital detox to minimize any device dependence. You could be transitioning into a remote role for the first time or are already deeply embedded in your home office.

If you’re looking for a simple project your team can work on together, consider having them create a birth map. Participants can also take a less fancy approach to the occasion and merely meet up to enjoy a hot cup of tea and relax together on a video call. This showed that even the less active team members could contribute efficiently. Of course, everyone was supposed to do their best to make or buy sandwiches for that particular lunch and do a 2-minute presentation about their meal. Sometimes taking some time out together as a team is what you need to help see the human side of your co-workers. Virtual escape room is a wonderful collaborative exercise to improve communication and teamwork.
