Liver King, 45, admits lying about taking steroids to achieve his muscular physique

Very rarely, lupus can cause a painful red eye or changes in your eyesight. If you have any symptoms affecting your eyes, it’s important to see a doctor as soon as possible. If left untreated, eye problems caused by lupus can lead to permanent damage to your eyesight. This can lead to an increased risk of angina, when a reduced amount of blood gets to the heart muscle.

To avoid any complications arising, it’s always best to seek advice from your doctor and avoid drinking beer whilst using steroids. When alcohol interacts with this system, it begins to lower the levels of testosterone and oestrogen levels increase. This, in turn, means the body becomes prone to storing fat and losing muscle mass, reducing the effectiveness of steroids altogether. There are also psychological side effects that come along with mixing steroids and alcohol.

Blood clots can develop in the deep veins of your body, usually the leg. A blood clot can be very serious if it travels to your lungs (pulmonary embolism), although this isn’t common. Your healthcare team may give you a small card to carry with you while you are taking steroids. This is so that anyone else treating you, such as your dentist or in an emergency, knows that you are on steroids.

Steroid Induced Diabetes

Most people will only have one or a few of the possible symptoms, and many people find that the symptoms come and go. The rest of this information is about SLE, which we will call lupus. People can get it in one small area on the skin, or it can be widespread. It has important information about the type and dosage you take, which may be needed in an emergency.

There are also restrictions on drugs that you can take if you’re breastfeeding. Most women with lupus should be able to have a baby if they wish to. It’s best to discuss your plans with your doctor before trying to get pregnant so your treatments can be altered if they need to be.

Treatment for other conditions

Users tend to exercise more when they’re taking high doses to make the most of their improved performance during this time. Anabolic steroids are usually injected into a muscle or taken by mouth as tablets, but they also come as creams or gels that are applied to the skin. We know that it is common to struggle with your mental health when you have cancer or care for someone with cancer. This drug can cause inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis).

A small number of people with lupus have joint hypermobility. It can lead to problems such as joint pain, poor balance and in rare cases dislocation – when a joint pops out of place. Some people with lupus will only have these symptoms, though they can still have a big impact on daily life.

Increased appetite and weight gain

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to let your GP know. Our information about living with diabetes is a good place to start if you’re looking to learn more about your condition. Thousands of people with diabetes are using it to discover more about their condition and manage their blood sugar levels. The child may have to adjust their diet as well to help manage their blood glucose concentrations.

Can’t find what you’re looking for?

The concern arises when a person abuses one or both substances. If you have diabetes and you are prescribed steroids, then you may notice a rise in your blood glucose levels, which will usually mean that your diabetes treatment needs to be adjusted. It is important that you check your blood glucose levels regularly. If you are concerned that your diabetes is getting out of control while you are on steroids, contact your diabetes care team.

What Are the Risks of Mixing Steroids and Alcohol?

Avoid close contact with people who’ve recently had live vaccines taken by mouth (oral vaccines) such as oral polio or the typhoid vaccine. In the UK, live vaccines include rubella, mumps, measles, BCG, yellow fever and the shingles vaccine (Zostavax). We have more information about side effects and tips on how to cope with them.

Blood clots

Steroids, like any medication, can cause a variety of side-effects. But if you experience any, you should talk to your doctor. Use BRIAN’s quality-of-life tracker to record and monitor them, then share this with your healthcare team so they can support you. The steroid most commonly used with brain tumours is dexamethasone.

Other long-term side effects can include thinning of the lining of the stomach, so they may be prescribed with drugs known as antacids to protect against this. That being said, if the person affected by a brain tumour has a short to medium term prognosis, steroids can be prescribed for longer. This is because the side-effects likely wouldn’t arise during their life expectancy.
