The five states with the highest average local sales tax rates are Alabama (5.22 percent), Louisiana (5.07 percent), Colorado (4.75 percent), New York (4.52 percent), and Oklahoma (4.45 percent). Sales tax is imposed on the sales price of the sale of tangible personal property, specified digital products, or taxable services at the time the sale takes place. The seller of the goods or services is responsible for collecting, reporting, and remitting the sales tax. The tax is imposed when the first use of a service occurs, or potentially could occur, in Iowa, or when the tangible personal property or specified digital product is delivered in Iowa. An individual who titles a motor vehicle with the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles must pay a $10 title fee and a 5 percent title privilege tax (rather than the 6% sales tax).

What Do Sales Taxes Pay for?

Sales taxes are used to pay for a variety of state and local government services, from roads and municipal sewer repairs to schools and fire departments. In many cases, states will give voters an opportunity to vote for or against sales taxes for specific purposes.

There areno changes to local sales and use tax rates that are effective July 1, 2022. The combined local rates for a particular city range from 1.8% to 7.75%. Which States Have No Sales Tax?

Five states in the U.S. currently do not levy a sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon.

The highest sales tax in the state is in Atlantic City at 12.625% . There is no state sales tax in Alaska; however, local governments – which include boroughs, the Alaska equivalent of counties, and municipalities – may levy up to 7.5 percent. Items Subject to the 7% Combined General Rate

Missouri moved in the opposite direction, going from 13th to 12th highest. This shift can be traced back to Kansas City increasing its fire protection sales tax by 0.25 percentage points and Platte and Butler counties levying new 0.25 percent sales taxes to support law enforcement.

The highest sales tax in Alabama is Flomation, Alabama, with a sales tax of 11%. There is an additional 6% state-only sales or use tax on the short-term rental of a passenger car rented within New York State, or rented outside New York State for use within New York State. South Dakota has a 4.5% state sales tax, plus any additional local taxes. An additional 1.5% sales tax is added during the summer on sales in tourism-related businesses, dedicated to the state’s office of tourism. As of June 1, 2007 counties and some cities may impose an additional 1% to 3% sales tax.
